Andrew's BIG Mistake

On Tuesday in the midst of motherhood with the addition of Ada at the house, Andrew did a foolish thing. I saw him gagging, and thought that he was getting ready to vomit. So I pulled him in to the bathroom and yelled at him to vomit in the toilet. Just then, he stopped and said, "I swallowed it." I wish he was referring to vomit, but he wasn't. Andrew had been playing with a magnetic building toy set that he had received from a friend as a birthday present. He had put one of the silver magnetic balls in his mouth, gagged, then swallowed it. What proceeded next was a flurry of activity. The biggest issue at hand was getting to the truth. After I stated that we might have to go to the hospital, Andrew quickly changed his story. He had not swallowed a toy but had in fact spit it out in the playroom. A quick phone call to his Daddy cleared things up, and yes he confessed that he did swallow it. Not to worry, our pediatrician said that he should pass it in the next 72 hours but it would be wise to check his stool. Check his stool?! Uh yuk! Three days later, no silver ball. Maybe it'll pass on Saturday.

In my opinion, I would throw those in the garbage. Not to scare you (actually, yes to scare you) Things similar to those (Magnetics) have been responsible for deaths in 34 infants and toddlers. If the child swallows more than one, they can attach to each other. Thus making them impossible to "pass" resulting in death. Please put them up WAY high when you have young kids there....or we might have to change care groups.

It's the magnets in the rods that are dangerous, fortunately not the metal balls. They are not magnetic (at least in our set); they are just metal which the magnets attract.

Kristie's right. I checked and the magnetic strip is actually on the connector rods. Also, I feel like I just got scolded by my mother and threatended by my friend. Not to worry Suzanne, they're gone forever.

I threw all of ours away a few months ago, too. I caught Justin holding them in his mouth on more than one occasion - (now he's certainly old enough to know better....but Kaitlyn isn't.) Hopefully you'll find a silver ball soon and end the 'oh so lovely' stool checks. ;0)
