As most of you closest to us are aware, we have some interesting neighbors. Very entertaining. Somewhat bothersome at times. Foolish. Absent minded too. And nice.
But I must say that for all the times that the college boys have irritated me, those days are getting less frequent and the days of their kindness is getting more frequent. Just today, I was raking the front yard with the boys during Hannah's nap. Chris came out of his house with the other college age neighbor, Jordan, and got into his car. Just as they were getting to leave. He stopped the car. They both got out, walked across the street to my house and asked if they could lend me their leaf blower. I was stunned. I'm starting to feel like I have two little brothers in the neighborhood who come to help when Jason's not home. Would they have offered the leaf blower to Jason if he'd been raking? I don't think so. They know he doesn't cook as well as I do. In exchange for a slide once from Chris' backyard, he got a home cooked meal and dessert from me. They even came over to install it for us. They've offered to help me with the yard before and even dig up a holly tree. But I'm in need to extend grace and kindness to Jordan too. I haven't done anything kind for his family yet. Pretty terrible, huh? We've been in the house for two years and all I've done is call animal control on them to get the 3-4 dogs back in the house. So that's my goal this fall, to bake some bread or a dessert and to extend God's love to them in a practical way. How about you? Have you benefited from the kindness of your neighbors? What have you done for them? I'd love to hear some stories.
