Celebrating a 90th birthday

My sweet maternal grandmother celebrated her 90th birthday last weekend. She was born April 17, 1917! We all knew she'd live this long because of how active she has been throughout her life. She was one of the best tennis players in Memphis, but the absolute best according to her is her friend who just celebrated her 100th birthday a month ago. Can you just imagine what you'd see and experience if you were given a life that long? My grandmother was telling me that she remembers her monthly mortgage payment was $30.00 when my grandfather and her purchased their first house. We can barely get a pair of shoes under that amount these days!

The entire family dove or flew in to Memphis to be with her last weekend. We all ate like kings and queens and spent the whole weekend together. We went to church together Sunday morning to sit on the same pew that we all grew up in. It was a neat homecoming to be there singing those old Methodist hymns and looking at the gorgeous stained glass and hear the organ. How times have changed. The majority of members at this service were all gray headed. But the highlight was seeing my grandmother's face light up as she looked at three pews filled with her family all back again worshipping with her our precious Lord Jesus. She would sing, then look around and smile the biggest smile to everyone, then sing again. Oh, I pray that I never forget that memory. She looked so beautiful in her purple suit and her hair all done up. What a treat to be with her.

But my biggest disappointment was that I did not get any good pictures of the birthday girl. I'll just have to wait for someone to send me their copies (hint, hint). But here's one of Mema eating cake with Hannah as well as her descendants getting ready for a group picture.
