To my surprise, Jason got us 4 chickens from friends of ours who had received 45. He'd been talking about it for a while but I thought he wouldn't go through with it. I thought it was just a passing phase that he wanted chickens. But now, I know not to dismiss ANY conversation that he might have about ANY idea that he has. Because a few weeks ago, he came home with a cardboard box filled with 4 chicks, one for each child. Jason really wanted us to start eating fresh organic eggs. The kids love the chicks. Their names are Tom, Chip, Daisy and Sara. They are quite cute and will be caged in a coop in the backyard within the next two weeks. Right now, they have been living in a box under a lamp in my office. But that's until they get all their feathers in and can warm themselves. Then, they'll be banned to the coop forever. Surprisingly, they are very quiet. They only peep when a little child of mine is messing with them too much. So in a few months we should always have fresh eggs in our house! Then Jason will start going to his new friend's farm for fresh milk from her cow. Yes, he met somebody else who has a farm and she has a cow. She's even offered milk to us as long as we can help pay for some of the feed for it. I know that if we weren't living in the city, that cow would be in our backyard in a heartbeat.
In case you're wondering, no it's not illegal to have chickens within Knoxville's city limits. Only cows, sheep, goats, horses and such are banned unless you've been grandfathered in because of a family farm.
