Finally, EGGS!

Last spring, Jason came home with 4 baby chicks courtesy of our friends, the Boyles. His intention for having them was to have eggs. So we've been patiently waiting all summer. He built them their own little red coop and I painted the See Rock City on the roof.

Hens will start laying eggs when they are around 22 weeks old. The end of September, our "girlies" turned 22 weeks but held out on laying eggs for us til 24 weeks old. But Sunday morning, we discovered that Daisy, our Rhode Island Red hen laid two beautiful bluish green eggs. Yipee! No more worries that we don't have enough eggs for breakfast or for baking something. I just have to go out in my own backyard and get them from Daisy, Chip, Sara, or Tom.

Just one question - Are Chip and Tom girls?

Yes, we only have hens. NO roosters waking us up in the morning! I tried to tell the kids that those names were typically boy names but they didn't care. When Chip was a chick, her stripes were just like a chipmunks, hence the name. Tom? Don't know where they came up with that one, but they do call her Tommie sometimes.

Blueish eggs? Did you eat them?

We haven't yet because they were cracked. Jason did some research and discovered the Rhode Island Red hen will always lay a blueish green egg. Looked as beautiful as the sky actually.
