Andrew 1st day of Kindergarten

After recommendation from a friend, Jason and I implemented a new tradition in our house, a "First Day of School Surprise." Sunday night we decorated the playr oom with streamers and balloons and posters. There were "Welcome to Kindergarten" posters, a Clifford Calendar, a Pledge of Allegiance poster and a Manuscript Writing poster on the playroom walls. Andrew also had a gift waiting for him at his seat on the school table. New crayons, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners and a purple pencil box were wrapped in a colorful gift bag. The night before, we read the book, "Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!" To say the least... he was pumped. I was even surprised that he was able to sleep. Bright and early he was awake this morning. He even greeted me at the front door at 6:45am as I walked back in from running. I let him choose his favorite breakfast to eat. All he wanted was his absolute favorite: Quaker Brand Cinnamon Roll flavored oatmeal. By 9am the whole family headed downstairs to start the First Day of School. Andrew was elated by the gifts! Jason was able to stay home until Andrew opened his gifts, then he headed off to work. That battery powered pencil sharpener has gotten it's work out today. It's been going all day.

We started with Devotions. That includes praying, reading from his Bible, singing along to two worship songs on a cd and memorizing a bible verse. Then we completed our Language Arts curriculum (Sing, Spell, Read and Write). We took a PE break and swung on the swingset and played soccer. Then came back in for a cool down break which included lots of water, popcorn and a Thomas the Train video. After finishing our language arts, we started our math. All in all, I felt that we had a blast! I enjoyed the time together with structured activities. Ethan and Hannah joined us during devotions, sang with us, colored and had fun too. During free time this afternoon, Ethan asked if he could stop watching Sesame Street and go downstairs. I asked him why, what did he want to do? And he said, SCHOOL! Guess he had more than than I thought he would. He was actually disappointed that I wasn't going to do more today. That's a blessing and an answered prayer! I just hope that the rest of the week will go as smoothly as today did. Please pray for an easy transition for us. We'd appreciate it.

Good luck! How fun that the other kids joined in! Jack and the girls just started school, too--preschool at the local Baptist church (yea for Mommy). That's a great idea about decorating everything. I wish I had thought of that!
