History Lesson on WW II

Tonight, I'm researching curriculum books for Andrew's first grade year. The kids are playing in the playroom. I overhear Andrew tell Ethan all about WW II, mostly that the Americans were fighting the Chinese. They are acting out the War as Andrew is commentating on all that happened, like he knows. :)

So, I guess all those History Channel shows with dad are sinking in but need to be elaborated in a 6 year old's mindset. Anybody have any suggestions on how to teach a soon to be 1st grader about World War II?

You might consider reading a chapter from a children's historical fiction account from WW II everyday out loud to the kids (maybe while they eat lunch or something).

I also liked how the Chronicles of Narnia movie brought in the WW II with the bombing scene at the begining.

Lastly, a number of episodes from The Waltons (shown on Hallmark channel daily)take place during WW II. Since it focuses on Walton's Mountain, you hear about the war without fixating on the violence.

Thanks for the advice! He's more in to who was fighting who and why so I guess I'll try to look for some elementary aged appropriate stuff at the library about the war. He loves this stuff! It might be because his daddy does and he has a room filled with WWII model airplanes and airplane bomber books. My thought is that since he's interested, why not teach it? You know, on his 6 year old level.

Absolutely! I loved history from a very young age. I always wanted to take family vacations to historical spots ( I still pretty much do!).
