One of the many blessings that homeschooling can give is the opportunity to "get out" of the classroom or in our case the playroom, and "go" experience learning in a different way. This week we have been studying about Veterans and Armistice Day so it was only proper to conclude the week at the Veteran's Day Parade.
The kids loved it, of course! This year, there were fly-bys with military helicopters and 5 Mustangs in formation traveling right overhead before, during and after the parade. The helicopters were traveling so slow, it seemed as if they were about to land on the downtown high rise buildings.
We were greeted with older veterans giving US flags and pinwheels out to everyone. Then some of the Veterans in the parade threw out candy. But the big excitement (for me) was the HUGE military truck who had trouble turning the corner and almost hit us, literally within inches!!!!!! I was frantically yelling to the kids to back up, grabbing Hannah and turned around to notice Ethan (deer in the headlights boy) just sitting there on the curb. A soldier actually grabbed him up to put him farther back on the sidewalk. The problem was that we could only go back as far as the people behind us and they weren't moving very fast either. Needles to say, every other tank, jeep, car, etc. that made that turn made us jump quickly to our feet and back up even when not needed. I'm a quick learner, next year we'll not be sitting near the street corner at parade time. The boys highlight was seeing how the tank turned and made that same corner with a breeze by backing up and going forward and of course the Mustang fly-bys.
