Last Saturday we joined thousands of people in Oak Ridge to celebrate their 6th year of the Secret City Festival. It's a festival to celebrate Oak Ridge's heritage. The main reason we went was to allow Andrew to see the Southeast's largest WWII re-enactment. The kids really enjoyed seeing the 30 minute mock Invasion of Normandy. We also ran into many families from church, mostly the families with dads who love history and guns and share that love with their sons.
The boys really enjoyed it! They actually shot off blanks which were quite loud. There were smoke bombs and tanks and jeeps and medics. It was very sobering to see it acted out for so long. Baby Caleb was just fine, he didn't even flinch when the guns and tanks were shooting. He enjoyed hanging out on the blanket in the shade playing with his toys.
Andrew and Jason have decided that when Andrew gets a little older that they'll join the 200+ crews of actors one day. Jason can sit and talk with the people about his interest: the specific guns and ammos used and Andrew can talk about his love, the battle stories. After the re-enactment, the crowd was welcomed in to the park where people could see everything up close and talk to the actors.
Here are some great shots Jason took at the show. They look pretty real especially the ones in black and white.
